Homemade Fun
I decided to do some homemade cooking yesterday. I started off making granola. We love granola but it can be quite expensive. It was rather simple to make and it turned out delicious. You can make it even cheaper if you cut out dried fruit. Yummm! I used this recipe from Family Fun cookbook:4 c. rolled oats
1 c. wheat germ
1 c. slivered almonds
1/2 c. sesame seeds (I only used about 1/4 c.)
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
1/3 c. vegetable oil (I used cranola)
1/3 c. honey
1/3 c. water
6 oz dried fruit (I used apricots, blueberries and cranberries)
1. Heat the oven to 300ยบ. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the oats, wheat germ, nuts, sesame seeds, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
2. Make a well in the dry ingredients and add the oil, honey, and water. Toss the mixture until the ingredients are well combined, then spread it evenly on a cookie sheet.
3. Bake the granola for 40 minutes or until lightly browned, stirring every 10 minutes to keep the mixture from sticking. Let it cool completely, then stir in the cranberries or dried fruit. Makes about 7 cups.
Then our new yogurt incubator came in the mail yesterday. We have been very excited about making our own yogurt. It is also quite easy to make. We were able to enjoy delicious raw milk yogurt this morning, topped with fruit and homemade granola. The yogurt still needs some tweaking (it wasn't quite sweet enough and just a little too tart for our liking, but the consistency was about right). It is an art form. The girls enjoyed making their own parfaits this morning. They also devoured a whole carton of raspberries! Ah, eating healthy can be fun
