Doctors, Doctors and More Doctors
This last week was a busy one for us. We had four doctor's appointments, preschool, MOPS, a First Steps meeting, one therapy, ballet and even a girl's night out for me! I am exhausted just typing it again. All said though, everything is going well.
We started off the week with a First Steps meeting. Each year we review Mia's therapy plan and set new goals. Our goals are simple: that Mia would gain 2 lbs in the next six months, that her walking and balance would improve, that she would learn to go up and down stairs. Since First Steps is a state-run program that is only for ages 3 and under, we also have to start a transiting program. This is basically a social worker that helps us understand our rights as parents and helps us transition into private therapy for Mia. It may not sound like much, but it is a huge deal. First Steps pays for a huge chunk of the therapies right now, and the therapist come to your home. They also do evaluations every three months. We will have to find our own therapist and travel to their facility and we can hope and pray that insurance will cover it from here on out. Plus then you have to start working with the school system at age three. Let's just say I am glad I am getting some help with all of this. Our development pediatrician is also setting me up with a case worker through Riley that does the same thing. I thought two opinions and two people helping me find the best fit for Mia could not be a bad thing.
Then we hit the doctor's appointments. Mia went to the gastrointronologist, developmental pediatrician and the orthotist. Whew! Mia gained a little weight and now weighs a little over 21 lbs., but she is still not gaining like she should. Her gastric doctor put her on a new medicine. It is used to treat migraine headaches, but one of the side effects is a huge increase in appetite. We are going to try it for two weeks. It seems to be helping a bit. The developmental pediatrician was very happy with Mia's overall progress. She ordered a sleep study due to some minor concerns and is doing some follow-up on her PT plan. Overall, she received a positive report. The orthotist made some minor adjustments to Mia's leg braces to keep her from walking of the outside part of her foot. All good news.
I also had an OB appointment this week. The baby is doing great. We had another ultrasound to see the heartbeat. The girls were with me, but I don't think they had any idea what they were looking at. The baby is the size of a grape right now, so even on the magnified screen, there is not a whole lot to look at other than the little heart pumping like crazy.

It sounds like Mia is progressing slowly, but surely. I hope the new medicine works out for her appetite! I'm sure it was exciting seeing/hearing the heartbeat of the baby for the first time
