Update on Mia

I thought I would give a quick update on Mia since we have had some recent health news.

Let's start with the good news.  It is always more fun to read, right?  Mia is doing great walking and pretty much walks everywhere now.  She doesn't want me to hold her as much, so we take quite a while to get into the grocery (or any place else for that matter), but I enjoy getting to hold her hand rather than have her hiked on my hip.  She still stumbles quite a bit, but it is getting better.  And we still have to work on her hip motion and elongating her trunk and rib cage, but we she is making such progress.  She now has to do lots more stretches and sit-ups.  Yep, some days Mia does more sit-ups than Mommy (that's pathetic, but true!).

Mia also just got new glasses today (see pictures).  Her old pair snapped during a crash from walking.  The were badly scratched to begin with, so it was time.  They look much like her old pair, but a little more pinkish brown than gold brown.  She seems to like that they aren't all scratched up.

And now the bad news.  First off, Mia's amblyopia (lazy eye) appears to be worsening.  The eye specialist couldn't tell if it was from being without her glasses for several weeks or not, so we are going back for another check up in January.  Hopefully it was just an issue of going too long without her glasses (they were broken for two weeks), but if not, Mia will have to start eye therapy, which involved patching certain eyes for various times, along with eye exercises.  If the problem is not resolved by age six, we will have to resort to surgery.

Mia also had a gastrointestinal appointment last week that did not go well.  She has been relabeled as "failure to thrive."  She has grown 2 inches in 4 months (wow!), but hasn't gained any weight.  So, she is getting skinnier if that is even possible.  She is well below the chart at this point.  The nurse practioner we had was rude and accusatory, suggesting that I was not feeding Mia.  Although I wanted to punch her, I kept my cool and requested that we never have another appointment with her.  So, we are trying everything to get calories into Mia, adding things to her milk, high-calorie juices and butter on everything.  It is exhausting, but we go back in for a weight check in January and if she hasn't gained weight, we have reason for continued concern.  Mia is eating better than she ever has, but her appetite is still rather small most days.  She is due to repeat some blood work to test for celiac disease, so pray that the results come back negative.

Mia has also been struggling with another sinus infection and one of her ear tubes has dislodged into her ear canal.  So, it is just sitting there annoying her at this point.  I thought she had an ear infection because of the way she messes with her ear, but that's not the case.  We have put her back on antibiotics and allergy medicine to help with the sinus issues.
