The First Snow

The girls were quite excited to wake up to a blanket of snow this morning.  It was a welcome break in our usual routine.  Every morning we have to leave the house by 8:45 am to either get to preschool, Jazzercise or MOPS on time.  But today all of our commitments were canceled, so I let the girls sleep in.  When they got up we made blueberry pancakes.  They love pancakes.

They were so anxious to go play in the snow that at 9 am Avery had her boots on.  The only problem was that last year's snow suit was about two feet too short.  So, we headed off to Wal-Mart for a new snow suit for Avery (and as it turns out Mia could wear the other one).  We finally got home and headed outside.  Avery ran out of the house, tearing through the snow, while Mia got down on all fours and put her face in the snow.  This was Mia's first experience playing in the snow.  Avery taught Mia how to make snow angels and then we had a little snowball fight.  We got these wonderful snowball makers last year and they are great.  Perfect snowballs every time.  We even played catch with Bogey and they girls laughed and laughed every time Bogey tried to catch one and they exploded.  We made a very pathetic snowman head.  We tried.  Of course, we warmed up with hot cocoa after we came in from the cold.

"Mom, we just want to go out in the snow!"

"This is kind of tasty."

Perfect snowballs every time.

I know, it is just a head, but it is all we could do.

Our own little snowman.

The girls continued to beg me to go out again.  So, when Chris got home he took them out again... in the dark.  The snow wasn't packing as well, but they still had fun.

It's never too dark to play in the snow.

Something about the first snow is so exciting.  And today reminded me so much of a childhood snow day.  No commitment, snowball fights, hot cocoa, tomato soup with grilled cheese, placing the wet mittens and hats by the fireplace and Mom home to enjoy it all with us.  Everything about today seemed warm and cozy despite the temperature.

As a side note, we also decided to quickly "elf" the girls while I was checking my email today.  http://www.elfyourself.com/?id=1174125110

I know - my husband and I agree that those snowball makers would have been so cool when we were younger.  Actually they are super cool as adults.  One of the most fun things about having kids is getting to have days like those - reliving and sharing your own childhood
