Two weeks of appointments and outdoor fun.

These last few weeks have been filled with lots of doctors’ appointments but lots of fun as well.

All of Mia’s specialist must be on the same schedule because it was time for her three month check-up from her pulmonologist (lungs), gastroenterologist (digestive track) and developmental pediatrics.  So, we have been to the hospital quite a few times in the last two weeks.  Mia was given an antibiotic to help cure an untreated sinus infection.  It worked and we are finally off breathing treatments again.  Hurray!!

Due to her lack of appetite and slow digestive track, Mia was put on a medicine called Reglan three months ago.  Since then we have seen little to no change in her appetite so we have now added a low dose of an antibiotic to help her digest quicker so she doesn’t feel full all of the time.  The doctor went into great detail about how an antibiotic can work in this way, but with two kids in a little doctor’s office with lunch time quickly approaching, I didn’t hear all of what he had to say other than that we are going to give it a try and see if we can get Mia to eat.

Mia’s developmental pediatrician was pleased to see that Mia has gained a little weight,  (she weighed 20 lbs 5 ounces today!) but still concerned about her lack of appetite.  She has decided to try a completely milk-free diet for a month.  There is some new research out that some kids who have a lack of appetite, constipation and irritability can have problems digesting milk proteins.  Many kids who go milk-free seem to improve.  So, soy milk here we come!  I now have to read every label of everything she eats.  She is also being referred to another dietician.

Her developmental pediatrician also noticed that Mia prefers one side of her body and shows more tightness in her lower extremities on one side as well.  To make sure we did a lower spine and hip x-ray today to check the placement of her hips.  The preliminary results show that one of her hips is rotated out a bit.  We will know more about this next week, but this could be causing a problem with walking and balance.

Mia continues to struggle with her physical therapy and so our two main concerns at this point are her eating and her walking.  She keeps us on our toes as she has developed some resistance (that’s the nice way of saying she throws huge fits) to her physical therapy.   Her new walker came today so we will see how she likes this new device.

Besides doctor’s appointments, the girls and I have had a great time going on picnics, playing at parks and even ventured to the “big pool” on Tuesday.  We generally just go to our community pool to swim because it is easy and free.  But I got brave and headed over to the huge aquatic center near us.  They had a great 1 – 3.5 feet toddler pool with a little slide along with a huge sprinkler area.  The girls had a blast and Avery even put her face under the water.  Needless to say, they were exhausted when we got home.  And they are up for a special treat as we head to King’s Island on Saturday with Chris’ family.

I have finally gotten my sewing machine back out and have been doing some quilting again during nap times and bed time.  I finally finished this quilt that I had started earlier this spring.  It is to hang on our wall in our bedroom.  I am still very much a novice but I have enjoyed getting back into sewing.  It excites (and overwhelms me) to think of all the things I want to make.  I have some Dora material that is dying to be used… I just can’t decide what to make for the girls just yet.

I also had the pleasure of meeting up with a high school friend I haven’t seen in 10 years.  Back in our days we were a terrible- twosome, filled with sass and sarcasm (who me?).  We wrote a column in the school newspaper together.  She even dated my brother for awhile.  Turns out we still have quite a bit in common and it was so refreshing to be able to start where we left off.  Some friendship can stand the test of time, even a 10-year hiatus.

A crazy but wonderful two weeks… hello August!
