Grace Kids Camp introduces me to Power Ranger and Guns
I decided to volunteer at Grace Kids Camp this week (our churches VBS). I couldn't decide if I should shepherd Avery's group or not, so I marked age groups 3 through 5 year-olds. As it turned out, God wanted me in the 4-year-old class, not with Avery. And He gave me six boys to shepherd. Yep, all boys! It was an interesting first day.
One of my boys has autism so he has a one-on-one person that helps just with him. He had a great first day and he is such a blessing. His enthusiasm kept the group moving
Another one of my boys is very sensitive and many things upset him, so I was able to comfort him. By the end of the day, he gave me a high-five and said he was coming back tomorrow. Then I have one (and every group has one) that wanted to be the leader all day. He wanted to hold our designated sign when we traveled to different areas, and if it wasn't his turn to hold the sign, he tried to still be the leader by pushing and shoving the new sign holder. It was fun...
Probably the most eye-opening things today was when we were talking about the story of Moses. One of the questions I asked is what they were afraid of. I was expecting answers like the dark or lions or something along those lines. What I got was this: "I am afraid of ghosts with guns." Yep, that's right. I wasn't sure how to respond to that. Then they all started talking about how they should shoot the ghosts and how one of them had a grandpa that knows how to kill ghosts in "less than a minute." I tried to pull the conversation back to our study by reminding them we can find a safe place with God, praying when we are afraid. But by then we had moved on to Power Rangers (did you know there are two girl PR now?) and whether they know how to shoot ghosts. And of course the day was complete when we made swords out of snapping markers together during craft time. I tell you what, the princess training I have received so far with two girls, did not prepare me for these little boys. It cracked me up!
One of favorite things from today is during our worship time, a real live "spy" parachuted down from the ceiling right in the middle of our group. The boys thought that was the coolest thing in the world. (Our theme this week is SonForce Kids - kind of a spy kids thing).
All in all, it was a wonderful day filled with super-heroes, high-fives and baby Moses. Avery and Mia had a great time and can't wait to go back tomorrow. Mission Accomplished.
